Left to Right, Producer Josh Lind and Director Mike Goubeaux. Doritos Trophy.
For the continuation of our Thirteen and 1/2 Questions series, we recently caught up with an enthusiastic Mike Goubeaux coming down from the excitement of being a finalist in the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl Contest. His winning spot was featured in a previous Video Militia article. Mike's story is becoming increasingly common as high-end production becomes more and more attainable to the independent filmmaker, first brought on by a revolution in desktop post-production and in recent years with cameras finally becoming affordable. Like many featured here at Video Militia, Mike represents the future face of filmmaking, rooted in DIY skills that make him savvy with every aspect of the process from principle to post. See what this aspiring director had to say about being a champion among user generated content. Read more for the full interview.

hello thanks for the write up! I'd be happy to answer any questions you've got for me regarding white denim, the need to burn things and dancing like a Jehovah's Witness just before the Rapture, I'm a big Bruntel fan too, liked the piece on him. cheers Tom Haines
Factory Films director Tom Haines recently grabbed our attention with a badass video for Austin, Texas' own White Denim. It's been more than two weeks since we wrote that story, or any story for that matter (due to impending Sundance deadlines), but we were fortunate to be contacted by the man himself accepting our open invite to do this interview series. In this edition of Thirteen and 1/2 Questions we'll touch on the motives and madness behind the "Shake Shake Shake" video and next time we speak with Tom we'll be sure to more adequately question his need to burn things. "There can be something rather Zen about rotoscoping and animation but I get a little depressed when I spend weeks on end alone in a room in front of a computer screen. Last year I adopted a dog. Someday I'll teach him to hold a Wacom pen and all the Final Cut keyboard shortcuts."
The Directors Bureau's Andy Bruntel has shot videos for Rilo Kiley, The Mountain Goats, Stephen Malkmus, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, and No Age. We catch-up with Andy coming off his recent MTV premier of No Age "Eraser" in our ongoing series Thirteen and 1/2 Questions, and discuss his new video, design influences, film, music, and his significant breaks along the way. "You might want to revise that number - several of these questions appear to be two-parters." - Keith Schofield
This is the first edition of an interview series called Thirteen and 1/2 Questions, beginning with a Q&A with Director Keith Schofield. Keith was just recently highlighted in Saatchi & Saatchi's Annual New Directors' Showcase at this year's Cannes Lions 2008. We speak about that, the "Toe Jam" video, and advice he has to other young directors. Our line of questioning started with 13 basic puzzlers, +/- 1. Keith pointed out we should maybe revise that number but we are sticking to our guns.
